Learning Chinese Zodiac

How should you introduce animal names in Chinese? Through a farm game? Through a zoo activity? Well, it would be learning the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs for us at Acorn Valley this week. It is symbolic of the Chinese culture and all there are 12 animals names to remember.

It was a fun time for my Chinese as Second language (Chinesisch als Fremdsprache für Kinder) class this week. We made fingerprint cards for each animal in the Chinese Zodiac, and stick them together to make a collapsible stack of cards.

In order to make the class more interesting, here's how I introduce the animals to the children. Instead of showing them a picture of an animal and say 'This is ....", I played the animal sound game. Upon hearing the sound of an animal, they need to find the corresponding flashcard. Needless to say, they were really attentive because it was a game and they all wanted to win!
